The most successful shots from Duke Gardens were close-ups. Several reasons for this. First, the place was swarming with people, so it was a good way to frame them out of my photos. Next time I'll arrive right at opening time and try to beat the crowd. Second, and also related to time of day, the light was bright, sunny, and high contrast. In close-ups, I could find spots of shade with more even lighting. Third, the deciduous trees hadn't put on leaves yet so the wider landscape shots just weren't there. And finally, the 18-35mm has a lovely bokeh.
