Soccer Dad

Took a whole bunch of photos at my kids' soccer games this weekend.  Mostly action shots as you'd imagine, but also some environmental portraits (what a strange term; I never feel quite comfortable using it).

I had the 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 on the camera the whole time.  It works well for outdoor action shots, but I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked for portraits!  Very sharp, good colors, and the perspective is flattering when it's zoomed in a little.  The vibration reduction is extremely effective - both of these photos are hand-held and the second one is zoomed all the way to 300mm and taken from across the soccer field!  The lens produces photos that are maybe a bit less contrasty than I'm used to with my primes, but easily corrected in post if I feel like I need it.  The only complaint was that the bokeh was a bit jittery when the background was foliage. On simpler backgrounds, it was fine though.  I'm continually surprised by this lens.  Pretty amazing for $400.
